INDAGINI STRATIGRAFICHE AL CASTELLO DELLA ROCCA Stabilite la fasi di frequentazioni - STRATIGRAPHIC SURVEY OF THE CASTLE THE ROCK Established the phases of acquaintances

Saluto in argento di Carlo I d'Agiò, 1265-1282
I Greet in silver of Charles I of Anjou - 1265-1282

The Castle Rock is located at an altitude of 551 m above sea level on a rocky platform at the entrance of the gorge of Rosa, a short distance from the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Pettoruto.
The excavation is the result of a collaboration between the Superintendence for Archaeological Heritage and the Chair of Medieval Christian Archaeology and the University of Calabria (attended by the writers). During the campaign were carried out detailed surveys of the structure and open digital five excavations in order to investigate the various phases of the complex fortification. After a single excavation is difficult to establish the chronology of the foundation, but important for initial documentation has been the recovery of some anonymous class Class C, ascribed to the tenth or eleventh century, as well as many interesting recoveries from survey and excavation,
Angevin a greeting in silver with the Annunciation, the denier of Charles I and Charles II of Anjou. Certificates, again, the Tornesi Orient Latin dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
It is precisely at this stage that we can ascribe the abandonment of the castle, documented by a small "dump" in which they were recovered numerous osteological remains and fragments of pottery. The stratigraphic investigation has documented that the site was in Roman times, as attested by sealed ceramics African and eastern parts of the first and second century. AD, while the Greek era is reflected inside and outside the castle miniature vases of VI-V century. BC, in particular hydriskai with a flat bottom or foot to the heel. It is possible that the massive medieval structure uses as the foundation of an older building, perhaps phrourion of the Greek age, place to guard the throat, as an outpost of Thurii. Also important is the identification of a quarry for large rectangular blocks dating back to Greek. Where the assay was able to reach the bedrock, was brought to light part of a hut with an apse postholes perimeter. The impasto found here date back to the Bronze Final (X-XI century BC.), But there are also the oldest materials attributable to the Middle Bronze Age (sixteenth century BC.).
